The Last Of Us Episode 5 Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen Death Explain: Kathleen’s death at the end of The Last of Us episode 5’s climactic scene is the first one that has any depth. After telling Henry that it doesn’t bother her that he betrayed her brother to save Sam from leukaemia, the infected horde causes chaos. Henry, Sam, and Ellie get away from the chaos, but not before Kathleen catches up to them. Kathleen is then killed by what seems to be a Stalker, the second stage of an infected host with the speed of a Runner, the violence of a Clicker (as seen in The Last of Us episode 2), and the stealth that gives them their name.
The fact that the Stalker is a child host gives this death a different feel. Kathleen has already said that just because Sam is a child, the world doesn’t revolve around him and that kids die all the time. She also says that maybe Sam was supposed to die. The fact that a child zombie killed her gives her death a sense of poetic justice, even though she had good reasons for killing Sam. By the end of the episode, her comments about Sam made her seem like a bad person.
