On February 17th, 2024, New York Attorney General Letitia James held a press conference outside the courthouse following the verdict in her civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump and his business entities. After securing a monumental legal victory and over $350 million judgement, James spoke triumphantly about justice being served.
The Attorney General stated:
“Today, justice has been served. This is a tremendous victory for this state, this nation, and for everyone who believes that we all must play by the same rules – even former presidents.”
Let’s learn more about the groundbreaking AG behind this high-profile case.
Her Road to Making History
Before taking on Trump, Letitia “Tish” James already made history multiple times:
- First African American woman elected New York Attorney General
- First African American woman elected to statewide office in New York
- Longest serving New York City Public Advocate
Letitia James claimed she didn’t campaign on getting Trump, and that she "had no vendetta” against him.

In truth, her rallies were radical leftist community organizing — demonizing Trump, praising Obama and promising political vengeance.

Early Life and Education
Born in 1958 in Brooklyn to working class parents, James was one of eight children. She attended public schools before earning degrees from NYC’s Lehman College and Howard University Law School.
Legal and Political Career
- Worked as public defender, then for NYS Assembly and Attorney General’s office
- Sat on NYC Council from 2004-2013, chaired economic development committee
- Won election as NYC Public Advocate in 2013 with over 80% of the vote
- Took over as NY Attorney General in 2018
Is Letitia James Married?
While AG James keeps her private life very private, she has not been publicly linked to any romantic partners. James has never been married and does not appear to have a husband or children at this stage of her life.
At 64 years old, she seems firmly focused on her groundbreaking legal career at the moment. However, James has shared that she enjoys unwinding by listening to music and spending time with friends when off duty.
Her Passion for Justice
Why does Letitia James work so tirelessly to uphold laws? In her own words:
“The law is the great equalizer and the biggest pillar of our democracy.”
Since taking office, she has battled corporate corruption, sexual harassment, the NRA, opioid crisis contributors, and more. The Trump case headlined her targets.
“Because no matter how big, rich, or powerful you think you are, no one is above the law,” James has asserted regarding her decision to pursue the former President.
James’ Impressive Communication Skills
Measuring approximately 5′ 5″ tall, Letitia James may not have imposing physical stature. But her commanding voice and sharp wit ensure she dominates any press conference or speech.
Her fiery rhetoric and profound statements motivate social justice advocates. But critics argue James lets political ambition fuel her.
Regardless, the Attorney General knows how to craft compelling legal arguments – backed by an overwhelmingly convincing paper trail of evidence. Her communication talents surely helped take down Trump in the courtroom of public opinion.
What’s Next for Letitia James?
On the heels of the Trump trial conclusion, James shows no signs of slowing down her fights for accountability. She continues pursuing the NRA’s dissolution in ongoing litigation.
The Attorney General also recently launched investigations around the NFL’s workplace culture alongside California’s AG. And given frequent comparisons to crusading lawyers like Rudy Giuliani and Eliot Spitzer, rumors abound that James may aspire to higher offices someday like Governor or the Senate.
But for now, James heads back to work pushing forward cases centered on her mandate:
“I make no apologies, because this is who I am, and this is what I do.”
Powerful words from a trailblazing leader defined by her quest to ensure the scales of justice apply equally to all.
