Who is Luke Skywalker in Star Wars? What do we know about his many adventures in the first three movies?

What do we know about Luke Skywalker and the Jedi in general? Luke Skywalker is the most famous person in Star Wars, and the whole series is built around him.

The Star Wars character is the main character in the first three movies, and his legacy is explored more in the next three movies. He is the most famous Jedi, and we learn about the Force, the Sith, and the history of the Jedi through his eyes in the original trilogy.

But even after all this time, Luke Skywalker’s story, which spans many science fiction movies and decades, still has a lot to explain. So, in our complete guide to Luke Skywalker, we’ve put together everything you need to know about the galaxy’s best hero.

Who is Luke Skywalker in Star Wars

Luke Skywalker’s Story In The Star Wars Movies

Luke Skywalker’s story in Star Wars really begins in Revenge of the Sith, where we see him born and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Bail Organa decide to send him to Tatooine to live with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, away from the Galactic Empire and his dangerous father, while Princess Leia is sent to Alderaan.

In the Star Wars show Obi-Wan Kenobi, we see that the young Skywalker lives a peaceful, if boring, life with his family, doing moisture farming. He is in danger when Reva tries to find him, but he is saved in the end.

When Tusken Raiders attack him while he is looking for his missing Star Wars droid R2-D2, his adventure really starts. He is saved by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who tells him about the Jedi and shows him how to join the Rebellion. When Stormtroopers kill Owen and Beru, Luke chooses to join the Rebellion.

From there, Luke meets Han Solo and Chewie and is a big part of the plan to get Princess Leia out of the Death Star. After this works (though Kenobi dies), Luke takes control of an X-Wing and attacks the Death Star. By listening to The Force, he is able to destroy the space station.

Luke gets more involved in the plans of the Rebellion and then plays a key role in the battle on Hoth. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s ghost tells him to go to Dagobah and find Yoda so he can improve his Jedi skills. He and R2 fly their X-Wing to Dagobah, where they find Yoda and start their formal Jedi training.

Luke finds this hard to do because he keeps seeing Darth Vader and worries that his friends Han and Leia are in danger. After getting better at what he does, he leaves Dagobah against Yoda’s advice so he can go to Cloud City and save his friends from the Sith Lord.

He gets there too late, though, and has to fight Vader, who reveals that he is Luke’s father. After Han is frozen in carbonite, Leia, Lando, and Chewie save a badly hurt Luke and run away to figure out how to save Han.

Luke saves Han from Jabba on Tatooine with the help of his friends and his new green lightsaber. Then, he goes back to Dagobah to finish his Jedi training, but Yoda is too old to teach him anymore, so the green Star Wars alien dies. This means Luke’s training isn’t done yet, and Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, who want to turn him to the dark side, can use this to their advantage.

While Han and Leia try to take down the shields on the second Death Star from the forest moon of Endor, Luke is taken by Vader to Palpatine. Palpatine attacks Luke when he won’t join him, but Vader comes to save his son. When the second Death Star explodes, Luke and Vader have time to talk as father and son before Vader dies.

After Vader is killed and the Galactic Empire is defeated, Luke tells Leia that they are related and plans to rebuild the Jedi Order. In canon, the next time we see Luke is in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, where he is rebuilding his Jedi temple with Ahsoka and has taken in Baby Yoda to train.

Even though Baby Yoda decides to leave Luke and go back to Din Djarin, Luke goes ahead with his plans and rebuilds a Jedi temple and the beginnings of a Jedi Order. This is put in danger by the fact that he is teaching his nephew, Ben Solo, and when he senses darkness in the young Padawan, he thinks about killing him.

Luke gives up on trying to rebuild the Jedi after this moment of doubt. Instead, he goes to the planet Ahch-To and lives alone there for the rest of his life. There, he meets Rey, who is looking for a teacher to help her beat Kylo Ren.

Luke doesn’t want to help at first because of the mistakes he’s made in the past, but he ends up giving Rey some basic training and teaching her like Yoda taught him. Rey goes to find Kylo Ren, and Luke, seeing a chance to make up for his past mistakes, uses the force to send himself across the galaxy to Crait to face the young Sith there. His distraction lets Rey, Poe, and Finn get away, but it drains him of his last bit of strength, and the energy it takes to keep the projection going kills Luke in the end.

Does Luke Skywalker Turn To The Dark Side?

Luke was always capable of darkness, just like his father, but he never went to the dark side. On Dagobah, he kills Darth Vader in a vision before realising that he was actually fighting himself. Luke’s darkness is also clear in Return of the Jedi, where he wears all black and uses The Force to choke his enemies.

Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader both tried to use Luke’s ability to see into the dark when they tried to get him to join their side. Luke was able to say no, though, and his refusal brought down the Galactic Empire in the end.

But Luke’s dark side came back when he almost killed the innocent Kylo Ren. Once again, Luke was able to keep his temper in check. But his momentary mistake still had effects he hadn’t planned for, and it almost led to the return of Emperor Palpatine. Luke did the right thing and showed that he could get past his problems, just like he did before.

How Does Luke Skywalker Die?

In The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker dies when he uses The Force to make a projection of himself on the planet Crait, across the galaxy.

Luke’s last bit of strength goes into keeping this up, and we watch him die in front of the sunset on Ahch-To, knowing that he has done everything he can to help the galaxy. Luke then becomes a Force Ghost along with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Master Yoda. He appears to Rey in The Rise of Skywalker and tries to convince her not to hide away like he did because he was afraid of himself.
