Burt Bacharach What The World Needs Now

Burt Bacharach What The World Needs Now: When the sad news that Burt Bacharach had died Thursday morning, your first memories of the great songwriter probably depended on how old you were. Those who were around in the Sixties may recall the singles he co-wrote with Hal David for musicians like Gene Pitney, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas. Children of the 1980s are more likely to know songs like “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” by Christopher Cross, “Heartlight” by Neil Diamond, and “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne Warwick.

But if you started paying attention to pop culture in the 1990s, you probably first heard of Bacharach when you went to see Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery in 1997. The critical scene happens in the middle of the movie when the spy from the 1960s is trying to get used to life in the 1990s. Powers, accompanied by Bacharach’s 1965 classic “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” drives alone around Las Vegas, encounters a bunch of youthful pals who taunt him, tries to play a CD of the Byrds on a record player, pumps up his Reebok Pump shoe till it explodes and covers him in powder, and finds out that Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Mama Cass have all passed away. (Note: He says again that Cass died because she choked on a ham sandwich, which is a cruel urban legend. It was a heart attack.

When he learns about the last 30 years of world history, like the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the end of apartheid, he gets more emotional. But then he takes Elizabeth Hurley’s character on a ride on top of a double-decker bus down the Las Vegas strip. He says to the camera, “Ladies and gentlemen.” “Mr. Burt Bacharach.” Bacharach is there, wearing a tuxedo and playing the song on the piano. He’s only on camera for a few seconds, but it’s one of the most memorable parts of the Austin Powers trilogy.

Around this time, Bacharach and Elvis Costello were putting together their great album Painted From Memory. In the 1999 movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, they sang a new version of Bacharach’s classic song “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” as Powers serenaded Heather Graham on the streets of London. In the 2002 movie Austin Powers in Goldmember, Bacharach doesn’t show up until the end credits, when he sings “What the World Needs Now Is Love” again at the piano.

For the past 20 years, there have been rumours about a fourth Austin Powers movie. Last year, Myers said that he could “neither confirm nor deny the existence of such a project.” If it does happen, it just won’t feel the same without a Bacharach moment. He was the soft spot of the Austin Powers movies, and we’ll miss him very much.

Burt Bacharach What The World Needs Now Lyrics

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last ’til the end of time

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, lord, if you want to know

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some oh, but just for every, every, everyone
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
