“Fat Tuesday,” which is also called “Carnival Tuesday,” is called “Mardi Gras” in French. Mardi Gras always happens before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of the Christian fasting season. In order to get ready for this, people party and eat a lot on Fat Tuesday. In 1875, Fat Tuesday became a state holiday in Louisiana.

Celebrations of Mardi Gras go all the way back to the Middle Ages in Europe. But the Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans came from the Catholic faith. Karen Leathem, a museum historian at the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans, tells USA TODAY that it is also a part of “French celebrations, African music, and the tradition of the masquerade.” Everything from eye masks to colourful beads to parades put on by the Krewes of New Orleans has this cultural meaning.

When is Mardi Gras?

This year, Mardi Gras, also known as “Fat Tuesday,” is on February 21. It can happen at any time between February 3 and March 9. This is because it happens the day before Ash Wednesday, which starts the Lenten season, which is also different every year.
