Where Was Killers Of The Flower Moon Filmed? The much-anticipated Western crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” was primarily filmed in Oklahoma. This location was chosen because the events depicted in the film took place in this region. Principal photography for the movie kicked off on April 19, 2021. Filming primarily occurred in Osage County and Washington County, with Pawhuska, Fairfax, and Bartlesville as the main filming sites. These locations offered a pristine and authentic backdrop for the film’s historical narrative.

Scorsese’s Perspective on Filming Locations

Legendary director Martin Scorsese strongly believed in capturing the real essence of the narrative through its filming location. Scorsese expressed his joy and eagerness to begin production in Oklahoma in a news release issued at the start of filming. He emphasized that being able to tell this story on the very land where the events occurred is critical for an accurate depiction of the time and people. Scorsese expressed his gratitude towards Apple, the Oklahoma Film and Music Office, and The Osage Nation for their support and assistance during the shoot.

Unexpected Events During Filming

Despite meticulous planning, the production faced an unexpected event when Robert De Niro, one of the lead actors, suffered a quadriceps muscle injury off-set. However, this did not delay the production. De Niro returned to New York City for medical attention, and his subsequent scenes were rescheduled for filming in June 2021. Filming ultimately wrapped up on October 1, 2021.

The Impact of The Osage Nation on the Film

The Osage Nation played a significant role in making “Killers of the Flower Moon”. According to the film’s co-star, Lily Gladstone, in an interview at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the input from the Osage Nation greatly altered the film from Scorsese’s initial vision. She emphasized that the collaboration with the tribe positively impacted the film. In her words, “The work is better when you let the world inform your work”, indicating that the cultural input from the Osage Nation enriched the storytelling and authenticity of the film.
