The nine-episode miniseries created by Shonda Rhimes (‘Grey’s Anatomy, ‘Scandal’) with her producer Shondaland treats Anna Sorokin –Anna Delvey’s alias– as a mystery to unravel. A young woman of only 26 years old who was pursuing (in her own way) the American dream and who managed to succeed, deceiving a good part of the elite of Manhattan. Behind an image of glamor and elegance, Sorokin hid a calculating and ambitious woman, who did not hesitate to risk everything in order to achieve her power and fame. She ended up in jail, after a media trial, leaving behind her a multitude of articles in the press that tried to unravel how an ordinary Russian girl had managed to pass herself off as a German art expert without raising suspicions.

Sorokin was clear: he had to pretend until he achieved his goal. ‘Who is Anna?’ (‘Inventing Anna’), which Netflix premieres on Friday, begins with the young woman in jail. Her voiceover describes her as a determined and fearless woman, without any concern despite her situation. Several images contextualize the moment for us, at the end of 2017.
