What Happens To Brittney Griner Now? After months of “tough” discussions with Russia, basketball star Brittney Griner has been released. After serving 9 years of her term in a Russian prison for drug trafficking, the 31-year-old was transferred to a Russian correctional colony.

Following a 12-year sentence in an American jail, Griner was released in a prisoner swap for the notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

After leaving for Russia to play in the WNBA offseason in February, the athlete was stopped when airport security found cannabis oil in her suitcase. Griner’s attorneys argued that she should be given a break because Arizona health authorities had prescribed the drug to her to treat her chronic pain.

Marijuana is prohibited in Russia, but she was arrested and given a severe penalty a week before Russia invaded Ukraine. The US Department of State has stated that Griner’s detention occurs under “intolerable circumstances.”

Vice President Joe Biden reported that he had spoken with Griner and that she was “in high spirits” during his State of the Union speech from the White House. Furthermore, he said, “She’s safe, she’s on a plane, she’s on her way home.”

In February, airport officers at Sheremetyevo airport outside Moscow found cannabis oil and a vaporiser belonging to a basketball player. Russian law makes it extremely difficult to acquire this narcotic legally, and doing so carries severe penalties.

It happened a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, which ratcheted relations with the West. U.S.-Russian relations are at an all-time low due to the Biden administration’s criticism of Putin’s involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

As the US State Department put it, Griner was being held in “intolerable circumstances” while being wrongfully accused of a crime.
