The Northman Review (2022)

The Northman Review: The Northman is a violent one that will make all of your senses awaken. It has been described as “a brutal, bloody, kina bonkers tale of viking on viking” by Rollingstone Magazine.

It is known to be Robert Eggers’s biggest and most expansive (and expensive) feature to date. Also his best by far.

The Northman is a revenge tale. Amleth the boy will become Amelh the built, muscular, Viking royalty who plans to avenge what he lost. Alexander Skarsgard (Tarzan) has played a shirtless warrior before. So this is not new to him.

Eggers pulls out all the stops when it comes to this film. There are fights to the death, volcanoes erupting, a queen, Vikings, and many warriors. Then you also find some Shakesphere and Willem Defoe poetry in there. There are many meaningful lines and words in the movie.

“The Northman,” a Focus Features release in theaters on Friday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for strong bloody violence, some sexual content, and nudity. Running time: 137 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

A couple of noteworthy lines from the film:

I watched his innocense tonight. He must be wakened to what awaits him.
