Missy Elliott’s “Work It” Backwards Lyrics Means Something – And It Wasn’t Intentional

Missy Elliott’s “Work It” Backwards Lyrics Means Something – And It Wasn’t Intentional: We all struggle to rap the words to Missy Elliot’s popular song, Work It, which features backward lyrics that we all recognize. Twenty years later, the internet is only now realizing that the lyrics have significance, and it turns out that this was not the aim of the writers.

Anyone who talks about the top hip-hop bangers of the early 2000s would include Missy Elliot’s ‘Work It,’ ‘Get Your Freak’ On as some of their favorites; however, we must admit that we can only rap the chorus of the latter song.

Even now, more than three centuries later, the rhythms are still as irresistible as ever, and the internet has recently uncovered that Missy Elliot’s iconic reverse line from her song Work It really has an actual meaning — sure, we couldn’t believe it either.

Missy Elliot Completely Flipped It And Reversed It

The particular passage in question is:

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it
Ti esrever dna ti pilf nwod gniht ym tup I
Ti esrever dna ti pilf nwod gniht ym tup I

We were under the impression that the rapper was simply making noises to fit the music. Never mind that that sounded good; what’s much more astounding is realizing that “Ti esrever dna pilf nwod I” is the preceding line rewritten backward: “Ti esrever dna pilf nwod I.”

This song, written by Missy Elliot, has been referred to as “the queen of hip hop,” and she has stayed true to that title by actually flipping the rap game upside down with its lyrics. It’s still difficult to rap it quickly enough, even if we know it’s reversed, and to be truthful, “Ti esrever dna ti pilf nwod gniht I” doesn’t sound anything like what; she’s singing in the first place, does it?

Let’s just call it a “flimmin ippa nyet nyet” for now and keep it that way.

There are two other variants that Twitter users sing:

  1. Frilly knickers wet yet
  2. Your flipping summat wet yet

During an appearance on the Big Fat Quiz of Everything, British comedian Mawaan Rizwan revealed that he believed the question was, “Is your floppy d***y firm yet come on.”

What Missy Elliott Says In “Work It”

15 years ago, George W. Bush was still serving his first term as president, The Bachelor was a fresh new program, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were still married, and the song “Work It” by Missy Elliott was a worldwide hit. Despite the fact that the song peaked at number two on the Billboard charts, it was the video that earned her MTV’s Video of the Year award at the VMAs.

In spite of the fact that many fans like the song, many others had no understanding of what Elliott was singing about in the jumbled hook of the Timbaland-produced tune (although Elliott’s most ardent supporters were well aware of what was going on). Many people, including some who have been in the dark for years, are finally coming to terms with what exactly Elliott meant in that sentence, as reported by BuzzFeed in its original publication.

“I placed my item down, flipped it over, and reversed it/Ti esrever dna ti pilf nwod gniht ym tup I,” the song reads. “I laid my stuff down, flipped it over, and reversed it.” Can you figure it out? Yup, she literally just flipped the prior statement on its head. And then there are the people. Are. Shook. Most of the reactions to the paradigm-shifting news have been expressed in animated GIFs of astonished expressions, which have dominated the conversation on Twitter.

Everyone who already knew this truth, on the other hand, is probably thinking something along the lines of “come on, folks.” “Wait, people genuinely didn’t realize that Missy Elliott physically flipped and inverted her words in her classic song?” one user remarked on Twitter. SMMFH.” A third person wrote on Twitter, “Anyone who doesn’t get that doesn’t deserve Missy Elliott.” Harsh.
