The Chosen Season 3 Episode 7 Preview

In my analysis of Episode 5, I talked about how the Apostles became more suspicious and afraid. In Episode 6, the Apostles’ worry gets even more attention. Small things show how scared they are, like how the Apostles need to check if John’s followers are real and how Big James says Jesus should leave town soon.

But the scene where the Apostles are sharpening their knives shows most clearly that they are getting ready to use violence to protect Jesus. The argument about whether or not they should have attacked Veronica to stop her from touching Jesus against his will is alarming and shows how out of sync the Apostles are with Jesus. When Jesus finally tells them he’s going to be crucified, they won’t understand at all.

Some Apostles will find it hard to join the Jesus movement when it grows to include their Roman oppressors. This was brought up again when questions were raised about Simon Peter and Matthew’s friendship with a Roman (Gaius). I think that’s why the show is setting up a move to the Decapolis, where the Apostles will have to deal with their anti-Gentile biases and suspicions.

Simon Z is the main character of this theme because he has to decide how to deal with the threat posed by the Zealots who are after him. He is ahead of the other Apostles because he chose not to fight and told his enemies that Jesus was the Messiah without violence (except for Philip and Little James, who also seem more disposed toward peace). The Zealots are like a fun house mirror for the Apostles. They show them what they could be like if their suspicions and tendency to fight to keep getting worse.

Quintus and Pilate also show us how fear and suspicion can make people act violently to protect themselves. Both of them are worried about getting in trouble with their bosses, and that worry leads them to use brutal force (like the crucifixion) or at least think about doing so (like Quintus’s comment, “Kill Jesus of Nazareth”). Gaius, on the other hand, has become friends with Jews and is less afraid of them throughout Season 3. Instead of following Quintus’s lead and using force to get rid of the Tent City, he helps the people who live there out of kindness.
