That SAG Award Statue Is Actually a ‘Piece of Art’: You might not think much about the statue when you watch your favourite actors pick up their 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 26 on Netflix’s YouTube channel. After decades of award shows and the speeches that go along with them, the motion of lifting up some new hardware is just part of the deal. Antonia Gentry, who plays Ginny in Ginny & Georgia, will never take that for granted again after seeing how the statue of the actor was made.

“I’m crazy about it now. Gentry tells Tudum on a weekday morning before the awards show that it felt like she was making the One Ring from Lord of the Rings. The Ginny & Georgia star is the SAG Awards ambassador for 2023. She went to the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank to see how the bronze statues are made.

They’re really heavy. I’m going to aspire to get as many of those as I can just to start a workout routine, Just seeing someone make one statue really makes you appreciate just how special and handcrafted it is.
Gentry says

Angel Meza, who runs the foundry, says, “It actually follows the process that was invented many, many years ago.” Two kinds of moulds (wax and ceramic), molten bronze, welding tools, a chemical patina finish, and a lot of skilled hands are used in the process. So, no two are exactly the same. It takes about four weeks to make a statue as a whole, and Meza’s team will make 50 little bronze men just for the SAG Awards in 2023.

Elizabeth McLaughlin is a member of the SAG Awards Committee and a producer for the telecast. She thinks that the teamwork that goes into making statues is a good way to talk about SAG as a whole.
