Production Journey
Plans for this animated Spider-Man film were initially leaked in 2014 and officially announced in 2015. The unique style of the film combines computer animation with hand-drawn comic book techniques, necessitating the largest crew ever used by Sony Pictures Animation for a feature film. The movie is dedicated to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the original creators of Spider-Man, who passed away in 2018.
Release and Sequels
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” premiered in Los Angeles on December 1, 2018, and released theatrically on December 14. The film garnered worldwide acclaim, grossing $384.3 million against a $90 million budget and winning the Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards. Following the film’s success, two sequels and a spin-off centered on female Spider-related characters were announced, with the first sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” being released on June 2, 2023.
Plot
The film follows the story of New York teenager Miles Morales, who struggles with the expectations of his police officer father, Jefferson Davis. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Miles gains spider-like abilities, discovers a dimensional collider built by Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), and witnesses Spider-Man’s death at Fisk’s hands. In his attempt to honor Spider-Man’s legacy, Miles meets Peter B. Parker, a jaded Spider-Man from another dimension, and together they set off to disable the collider and prevent its catastrophic consequences.
The Spider-Team and the Final Battle
Miles, Peter B. Parker, and Spider-Woman Gwen Stacy eventually team up with other Spider-People from different dimensions to combat Fisk’s forces. However, upon realizing his inexperience, the team leaves Miles behind for his safety. After coming to terms with his powers and creating his own Spider-Man suit, Miles joins the fight, defeating Fisk’s enforcers and using the new drive to send the Spider-People back to their respective dimensions. In the end, Fisk and his henchmen are arrested, Miles accepts his role as the new Spider-Man, and the Spider-People return to their dimensions, with Gwen managing to contact Miles from her own dimension.
