“Story” is a piece of work that Sultan says he has been working on his whole life. It’s based on something that happened to him when he was four that changed his life, for better or worse. Last year, Sultan talked about this in his TEDx talk, which you can watch on YouTube. The song is powerful because of how open and vulnerable it is, and the sparse soundscape lets Sultan’s emotional voice stand out. It’s a very personal song that sounds beautiful in its rawness, but it will sound all too familiar to many people in Australia, whether they are Indigenous, asylum seekers and refugees, or someone else in a similar situation.

Sometimes, you have to let go of the past and move on. Velvet Trip, a duo from Sydney, just put out a song called “Moving On.” If you feel like you need to make changes in your life because you’re stuck or in a bad relationship, this could be the song that gets you going. In April, they will play in Adelaide, Sydney, Wollongong, and Byron Bay, and they will also play at this year’s Gumball Festival (see you there!).

Pete Hobbs, who plays in the indie pop band The Boy Least Likely To, has a solo project called Diving At Dawn. Their latest song is called “Lying By Myself.” On this song, Hobbs plays, sings, records, and mixes everything himself. He got the idea from Paul McCartney’s three solo albums with the same name. As a result, the song has a lot of warmth and beauty, with beautiful vocal layers and skillful guitar work.

This week, we were happy to find a new song from San Cisco in our inbox. “Lost Without You” is the WA band’s first song since “Between You & Me” in 2020. It’s a song that says relationships are always in need of work. “Everything isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, and you must work to make things work. We can also forget how important someone is to us and all the important history and challenges that come with being with someone for a long time. They also put out a very good music video to go with it. Bonnie and Clyde come to mind.

Ash Wallace and Gabe Everett work together on New Zealand’s Foley. Today, they put out “Coffee,” a shimmering dance-pop song that is sure to get stuck in your head. Tim Atlas is on the song.

Sydney four-piece “Children of the Hour” was made by Dande and the Lion. Sometimes in life you meet someone new, which can lead to a powerful conversation that ends up not going anywhere. This is nicely put together guitar-based indie pop.

The Gold Coast band Chutney’s new song is called “Madeline.” They’ve been playing this live for a while now, and it’s quickly become a fan favourite. In March and April, the boys are going on a huge East Coast tour. You can find out more on their Facebook page.

“Melhor Se Acostumar” is the first single by Pedro Mizutani, a rising star from Brazil. The 21-year-old singer was influenced by the great Joo Gilberto and other Bossa Nova singers from Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, where he grew up. He started posting videos of himself playing guitar and singing on TikTok. Since then, he has gotten over 100,000 followers and a record deal. It’s an interesting mix of new and old and the perfect thing to listen to as summer winds down.

SHAUN (), a South Korean singer, songwriter, DJ, and producer, has worked with Jeff Satur, a well-known Thai actor and singer. Their new song, “Steal The Show,” which is a good name for it, is mysterious and personal. Their voices are clear and dark but perfectly balanced as they dance from verse to chorus.

And finally, Freddie Bailey is giving us a first look at something new.
