Midnight Mass Angel Of God

Netflix has been putting all the meat on the grill for several years to get into the pockets of fans of the series. Works like The Witcher, The Squid Game, or The Curse of Hill House have unleashed a truly mass phenomenon, and Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan’s new production, was not going to be for less. It is a psychological horror miniseries that has 7 chapters of approximately one hour in length.

The Midnight Mass Story Begins

The story begins when Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) returns home after spending years in prison for accidentally killing a teenage girl while driving drunk. After the confinement, Riley returns to Crockett Island, a small island isolated from the world where the majority of the population is white and Christian and discovers that there is another newcomer to the place, a priest who arrived to replace the one they had before, who already he was very old.

Upon returning, Riley realizes that her family expects her to go to church, which is a tradition in the community and everyone should do it. The “madness” begins when the new priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) begins to perform miracles, curing the sick and even restoring youth to all.

With that, the fanaticism of the people increases, but there are those who begin to notice that there is something strange in all that and that the Midnight Mass (which gives its name to the series), which everyone is obliged to attend, does not it will be a celebration like any other.

What ‘Midnight Mass’ Is Really About?

When we got to episode 3 of ‘Midnight Mass’ we began to intuit those themes, with a recreation of Father Paul’s journey, discovering that he was actually the old chaplain rejuvenated by a vampire. The central idea on which the whole plot is built is so crazy that it could have come from a lost pulp horror novel from the 80s, the kind that has colorful and shocking covers. Mike Flanagan may have come up with everything from a dream cover.

A batman in the middle of the altar of a church, with a priest officiating the sacrament in front of all the parishioners. One of those illustrations of San Julián or Esteban Maroto for the Creepy comics that are so mind-blowing that no one in their right mind would ever try to bring it to the screen today. Well, Flanagan not only takes it forward but builds on it a story full of rich themes about faith and death, alternating the grotesque with the sublime while never ceasing to want to be a horror story, with rules known to all.

The miniseries covers the subgenre of vampirism, a fairly traditional one, and very heir to ‘ Salem’s Lot ‘, but which is viewed from the most realistic angle, perhaps as an episode of ‘The X-Files ‘, and through which Christian symbolism is deconstructed. . Father Paul brings what he believes to be an angel from Jerusalem, and with his blood begins to officiate “miracles” that involve poisoning the entire community with the pure blood of the vampire, rejuvenating some and curing health problems irreversible to others.
