Halsey is today a “trending topic” after posting a video on TikTok in which she complains that her label has told her that she will not publish her new single if she does not get it to go viral first on the Chinese platform.
TikTok has revolutionized the music industry thanks to its viral “sounds”, snippets of songs that are played in short TikTok videos and that can achieve great impact if said videos go viral. Today many hits present in the charts have gone viral first on TikTok.
Halsey isn’t the only artist to use TikTok recently to embarrass her label. FKA twigs recently posted a photo through which she said that her record label has “told her off” for not uploading TikToks. For her part, Charli XCX showed a photo of her with an exhausted face and associated it with “when the label asks you for the eighth TikTok of the week.” Even Florence + the Machine, who does not usually star in controversies of any kind, went to TikTok to promote her album by force. In the video, Florence reported that it was her label who had “begged” her to upload a video to the platform.
Ironically, Halsey’s video on TikTok has gone viral, and some suspect it belongs to a sneaky marketing campaign. An “anti-marketing” campaign in which Halsey criticizes her label publicly with the approval of her label. However, the author of ‘ If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power ‘ has assured that she has no interest in inventing this type of controversy and has confirmed that the video for her single is already filmed. Halsey explains that her label wanted her to post 6 TikTok videos over the course of a month so the song would “slowly and organically” go viral. The song is called ‘So Good’ and is produced by Max Martin.
