Vecna does not die in the ninth episode of Stranger Things season 4. Season 4 ends with his physical form being destroyed, but he remains a danger in season 5.
The Mind Flayer in the Upside Down has formed a bond with Vecna, as he tells Eleven in his reflection on the season finale. He intends to bring the Upside Down to Hawkins to allow the shadow realm to seep into our own.
Mike delivers a speech to Eleven that inspires her to overcome Vecna and free herself. As the battle continues, Nancy fires a shotgun at Vecna, causing him to catch fire and lose his corporeal form.
Vecna appears to have succeeded in his goal, as the protagonists observe the Upside Down begin to infiltrate Hawkins at the close of the episode.
Before it, Will senses a disturbance in the back of his neck, suggesting that Vecna and the Mind Flayer are still dangerous.

For the fifth and final season, fans of Steve (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) can now let out a sigh of relief.
Does Max live In Stranger Things Season 4?
Max is still alive but in a coma in the hospital, with Lucas and Erica by her side, two days after they arrived in Hawkins with Will, Mike, Argyle, Jonathan, and Eleven. Her heart stopped for a whole minute before resuming miraculously, as Lucas has confirmed.
