Did The Real Cocaine Bear Kill Anyone? Cocaine Bear is advertised as being based on a true story, but how much of the real story is in the movie? As it turns out, the real story of Cocaine Bear is kind of boring and sad, but the movie makes it seem much more interesting (and terrifying).
Cocaine Bear is based on a real news story from 1985 about a bear who died in the woods after eating a lot of cocaine.
The Real Cocaine Bear Plot
In December 1985, UPI told The New York Times that a 175-pound black bear “died of an overdose of cocaine after finding a batch of the drug.” “The cocaine was probably dropped from a plane piloted by Andrew Thornton, a convicted drug smuggler who died on September 11 in Knoxville, Tennessee, because he was carrying too much weight while parachuting,” the report says. The bureau said that on Friday, the bear was found in northern Georgia with 40 open plastic containers that had traces of cocaine in them.

No one is known to have been hurt by the real Cocaine Bear. The poor guy just ate something awful for a snack.
