Vismaya Dowry Death Case: A Kerala court has convicted the husband of Ayurveda student Vismaya case verdict of dowry death and abetment to suicide. Vismaya committed suicide by hanging herself from the snare at her in-laws’ house in June last year.
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) G Mohanraj said outside the court that Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Sujeet KN convicted the husband for the offense of dowry harassment under various provisions of the IPC and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Vismaya V Nair, an Ayurvedic medical student, and wife of a former employee were found dead at Kumar’s house in Kollam on June 21, 2021. The couple got married in May 2020. Kumar was reportedly unhappy with a new car, which was worth Rs 11 lakh, which was given as a gift by Vismaya’s father Trivikraman Nair at his daughter’s wedding.
Vismaya Dowry Death Case
Kiran Kumar used to torture his wife for dowry. Fed up with this, his wife committed suicide in August last year. The court convicted it under the charges of 304(b), 498(a), 306 IPC, and 3,4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Vismaya’s father spoke to reporters outside the court and said that his daughter had got justice. He said he did not have words to express his gratitude for the efforts of the prosecution and the investigation team.
Convicted Husband Dismissed From Job
Just before the verdict was pronounced, state Transport Minister Antony Raju told reporters that there will be no change in the state government’s decision to dismiss Kumar from service despite the court’s verdict in the criminal case. Kumar was an assistant motor vehicle inspector.
The court had on May 17 reserved its verdict in the case. The Kerala Police, in its 500-page charge sheet, had said that Vismaya had committed suicide due to dowry harassment. Vismaya, 22, was found dead at her husband’s house in Sasthamkotta in the Kollam district on June 21, 2021.
Relatives Were Told Stories Of Atrocities On WhatsApp
A day before the incident, Vismaya had sent pictures of Kumar being allegedly tortured over dowry as well as injury and assault marks on his body in a WhatsApp message to her relatives.
Her father had told a TV channel that during the wedding in 2020, Kumar was given a car worth Rs 10 lakh as dowry, besides gold and more than one acre of land. The father said Kiran Kumar did not like the car and wanted Rs 10 lakh in cash. When he was told that this was not possible, he started torturing Vismaya.
