Why Is Morgan Freeman Disgraced? Morgan Freeman attended the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup, held in Qatar, despite strong international criticism of the country’s human rights record.
Freeman was seen and heard narrating an introductory section called “The Calling” before the Qatari royal family and a sea of empty seats at the start of the event in the Al Bayt stadium.
The BBC aired only a portion of the ceremony, but it featured performances from several singers like K-Pop sensations BTS, American pop queen Nicki Minaj, and British legend Robbie Williams.
After endorsing Qatar, Williams joined a growing number of celebrities who have faced backlash in recent days.
The Guardian reports that 6,500 migrants have died in Qatar since building began on infrastructure for the World Cup, and the Arab nation has been criticized for its position on LGBTQ+ rights.
Why Is Morgan Freeman Disgraced?
Following weeks of criticism over the country’s human rights record, Qatar’s royal family watched Morgan Freeman launch the World Cup opening ceremony today in front of empty seats.
With fans descending on Doha’s city center for the imminent kick-off of the world’s most fantastic football festival, the 85-year-old actor, who four years ago apologized following accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior, narrated the event’s opening segment titled “The Calling,” telling viewers, “We all gather here in one big tribe.”
Qatar has been under fire for its treatment of foreign employees, stance on LGBT rights, and social restrictions, but the country is banking on a successful tournament to redeem its image. The government has refuted claims of worker maltreatment and discrimination.
Four years after eight women accused him of sexual misconduct, he finally appeared to apologize to “anyone who felt uncomfortable or insulted” by his actions.
Sixteen people (eight witnesses and eight alleged victims) said the actor had harassed or mistreated them while they worked together.
Football fans have taken to social media to express their outrage at the actor’s participation in the ceremony, with one user calling it “disappointing” and another writing, “When you have to act out a scene with Morgan Freeman “welcoming the entire world” to your country for a soccer tournament, maybe you shouldn’t host the World Cup.”
British viewers missed much of the opening ceremony because their networks opted to air a prerecorded story about the issue surrounding the World Cup and Qatar’s dubious human rights record.
