This will be the first time that the fan-favorite duo “Japril” has been on the show since it debuted in 2005.
Why Did Sarah Drew And Jesse Williams Leave ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?
Jesse Williams quit the program in May of 2018 after 12 seasons, while Sarah Drew left the series in 2018 at the end of Season 14 after being a part of it for 14 seasons.
The last time the couple appeared on the show together was for the episode that marked Williams’ departure. In that episode, they both revealed that they would be moving to Boston in the near future; he would be moving there to run his family foundation, and she would be moving there to be closer to the daughter they share.
Why Did Sarah Drew Leave Grey’s Anatomy?
At the beginning of each new season, the producers are required by Deadline to make a decision on whether or not they will pick up the option for each member of the cast.
They made the decision not to renew Drew’s contract just before the beginning of Season 15, which means that she was effectively fired from the ABC show.
It is said in the article that the choice was made creatively owing to the fact that the program is headed on a different route. In a statement, the showrunner, Krista Vernoff, said the following:
As writers, our job is to follow the stories where they want to go, and sometimes that means saying goodbye to characters we love.
After some time passed, Deadline was forced to make corrections to the article because it inadvertently suggested a connection between Drew’s exit from the program and the big salary raise that Meredith Grey star Ellen Pompeo received to remain on the show around the same time.
It was alleged that Pompeo made $20 million per year from the contract.
Why Did Jesse Williams Leave Grey’s Anatomy?
Williams responded as follows when asked by The Hollywood Reporter why he was quitting the ABC show:
This was an organic, collective decision; it wasn’t something I had to tell anybody. It was something we found and understood and were trying to honor it and do properly. It was a team effort throughout.
It didn’t feel like any one of us coming to the other and having an outcome predetermined. We wrote something together and this is what it was.
This came about as a result of conversations that the actor had with Vernoff concerning the direction they believed Jackson’s narrative should go in terms of the plot and how it should conclude.
