What Is The Maid Series About?

Alex ( Margaret Qualley, The Leftovers ) is a young mother who lives in poverty on the northwest coast of the United States. Together with her young friend Sean (Nick Robinson, Love, Victor) they live in a simple trailer and try to make ends meet with the income from Sean’s bartending job. The young father has an alcohol problem and expresses aggressive behavior towards his child’s mother. After an evening of fear, Alex takes her three-year-old daughter Maddy (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet) and flees to a women’s shelter – a social facility that is only accessible to physically or psychologically abused women and their children, or who are directly threatened by abuse. Because also the emotional or psychological abuse, which is expressed here through the aggressions, but also through dependencies, is thematized in ” Maid “. Without a car, Alex has nowhere to go and without data volume on her cell phone, she cannot contact anyone.

Her circle of friends consists mostly of friends of Sean and her parents cannot rely on either. Mother Paula (Qualley’s birth mother Andie MacDowell) is an art hippie who also lives in a trailer with her young friend Basil (Toby Levins) because he rents her house to tourists. It quickly becomes clear that Paula also lives in a toxic relationship/marriage and needs help on a psychological level. As a childminder for Maddy, she is usually unreliable, but Alex cannot rely on her father either, as the traumatic childhood has to be dealt with first.

There is also the problem with the authorities. To get social housing, Alex needs a job. But for this job an apartment and for ration cards one thing, the other or both at the same time. However, she quickly finds a badly paid job as a cleaner, where she can only work a limited number of hours a week, has to pay for gasoline and cleaning supplies herself and of course has to accommodate her daughter during working hours.
