What Is The Dropout About? Based on the podcast of the same name, The Dropout chronicles Elizabeth Holmes’s ambition and fame with Theranos. After leaving Stanford at the age of 19 to found the health technology company, she spent years developing a revolutionary idea that led her to be considered the next Steve Jobs. This Hulu miniseries focuses on the debacle and demise of Theranos as The Wall Street Journal unmasks the ‘fume sale’ that was the company.
Money, love, romance, tragedy, and disappointment, is how Hulu itself frames the story of Holmes and Theranos, in a narrative typical of fiction, but which focuses on reality to tell us face to face that nothing is what it seems in a story of ambition that ends terribly wrong.
What Is The Real Story Behind The Dropout?
Theranos was, in 2003, the universal panacea that would save the human race. It is no exaggeration, its founder Elizabeth Holmes, at just 19 years old, managed to invent a computer system that was able to analyze blood chemistry with just a small drop of body fluid. The revolutionary scientific solution could allow more efficient and practical diagnoses, which would propose a real twist to the health systems and services that we know today.
The jewel of Silicon Valley and the call to be the successor of Steve Jobs, received millions of dollars to finance Theranos, even coming, in 2014, to be considered by Forbes as the first woman to reach a fortune greater than one billion dollars.
By herself. However, this technological fairy tale would come to an end for her in 2018 when she was indicted for massive fraud following an investigation by The Wall Street Journal. Unmasking the truth about Holmes and how she lied to investors and clients, while Theranosit was placed under federal investigation and by the same 2018 it was completely dissolved. After several years on trial, in January 2022, Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of fraud and conspiracy. Holmes was found guilty on 3 of her 11 counts and is still awaiting her sentence, which could be up to 20 years in prison.
Who Makes Up The Cast Of The Dropout?
Starring Amanda Seyfried, the production also stars Naveen Andrews, who plays Holmes’ former partner and lover, businessman Ramesh Sunny Balwani.
The cast is completed with Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Michel Gill, LisaGay Hamilton, William H. Macy, Elizabeth Marvel, Laurie Metcalf, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Sam Waterston y Michaela Watkins.
Executive production was provided by Elizabeth Meriwether, Liz Heldens, Liz Hannah, Katherine Pope, Rebecca Jarvis, Victoria Thompson, and Taylor Dunn. Additionally, several of the episodes in this project had Michael Showalter directing.
When Does The Dropout Premiere On Star+?
The first three episodes of the series will be available on Star+ starting March 3. The remaining four will be added to the streaming service once a week every Sunday.
