More than a decade and 28 films later -29 if we count the one in question- since making contact with Jon Favreau’s ‘Iron Man,’ my experience with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made it clear that, at least based on my sensitivities and preferences, his best feature films have been those that have opted to escape from the ordinary and enhance the voice of those most responsible.

Thor Love And Thunder Recap

It took some time and tinkering, but Thor Odinson is now one of, if not the most dramatically fascinating figure in the MCU. Since Thor’s initial debut, Marvel Studios has taken care to give him emotional stakes even as half the globe disintegrates around him. A nearly immortal Asgardian isn’t the easiest hero to worry about when the war heats up. Even in Thor’s less-loved appearances, questions of familial expectations, maturity, duty, purpose, and yes, love, have always been at the fore. Thor: Love and Thunder know it needs to take the character on a new path. Love and Thunder honor his journey, even if it doesn’t add much to the MCU.

Through a Korg-narrated summary of Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) background, we see how his current employment as a freelancing Guardian of the Galaxy is helping him heal. Hemsworth has been daring in expressing Thor’s mental anguish and bombastic demeanor since Ragnarok. He continues to hit punchlines and physical humor. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is the unanimous vote for most iconic actor-hero coupling, but Hemsworth deserves to be included. Love and Thunder reunite Thor with his previous flame, Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and it’s a good romantic comedy.

Waititi embraces the genre’s cliches to set up Hemsworth and Portman’s chemistry, especially in an extended flashback that details their early happiness.

Jane Foster has moved on from Thor since their breakup, but she must seek help from the Asgardians when Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) enters the fray.

Jane did the fish out of water routine in The Dark World, but Mjolnir has made her the Mighty Thor.

Waititi spends a lot of time admiring Portman Foster’s intelligence and courage.

Portman shines as Jane contemplates what Thor’s power implies for her future. Jane’s desperation to develop a catchphrase veers too far into the MCU’s self-referentiality, and the joke’s payoff doesn’t land (superheroically).

In Love and Thunder’s standout opening scene, Christian Bale’s Gorr explains why he says “all gods will die.”

Bale plays every shade of The God Butcher’s villainy with verve. Bale clearly enjoys playing a more lighthearted comic character on a vengeance mission.

Love and Thunder play it safe with its central mission. Heroes and villains rush to stop Gorr before he gains an overwhelming advantage over the MCU’s other deities.

While the film is fast-paced, Thor and company aren’t encumbered for long. Love and Thunder double back to avoid upsetting the MCU boat.

This is especially obvious when Zeus (Russell Crowe) and his insane Greek(?) accent appear. Whether Love and Thunder’s reluctance to commit to its own choices is a Marvel-imposed limitation is unclear, but the picture feels less attractive during perilous moments.

Tessa Thompson’s King Valkyrie is underutilized in Love and Thunder. Thompson’s ease in portraying King Val’s swagger and baggage makes her a highlight, especially in her interaction with Thor and his Mighty counterpart.

Early scenes show her media appearances and efforts to boost New Asgard’s tourism sector, a thankless job she’s eager to do for her people. The movie’s second half botches this character. King Valkyrie’s role seems aimed to keep the tale moving, possibly to keep the focus on Thor and Jane.

Love and Thunder, like Gorr, miss the ball on Valkyrie’s complex qualities in favor of what will quickly bring us to the next battle.

Gorr’s shadowy minions sometimes hurt the legibility of the blocking, but the director (and Korg actor) Taika Waititi colors this movie with every color of the rainbow whenever he can.

Gods frequently bleed gold. Even when Love and Thunder go monochrome for a Gorr v Thor fight, magical energy sources brighten up with color. The whirling arena throws swirling shadows, giving the image a smooth palette like Ragnarok’s Valkyrie flashback.

Waititi tends to discover humorous beats in unusual and unexpected places in his films, as shown with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker.

Waititi didn’t have Matt Berry play a talking hammer (stop having good ideas, Tom), but he uses these weapons to fuel some of Love and Thunder’s best running jokes and mark Thor’s emotional throughline.

The soundtrack’s needle drops become repetitious as the heroes march into battle, and in artist curation: Love and Thunder offer four songs from one band, which is a confusing choice.

Waititi isn’t a delicate filmmaker, and with his Pandora’s box of a brain come swings and misses.
