When we talk about pizza, we typically think of the thin, crispy pizza that most of us know and love from our hometowns down south. However, contrary to what many people believe, the pizza that we crave cannot be found just anywhere in Italy. The truth is that pizza as we know it today actually came to Italy from Naples, the Naples area of Italy in the late nineteenth century. Naples was a leading city during the time of the Renaissance that had flourished through the years due to being a port and a city that was well-known for its trade links with other countries.

With this in mind, it’s easy to see why pizza would gain popularity among the masses of Italian immigrants who made up much of the population during the Renaissance. The pizza that we know and love today was adopted by Naplesans and became something of an Italian cuisine that came to be known as Neapolitan pizza. It was then that pizza began to slowly spread out into regions and cities outside of Naples and became known as pizza of the region. In other areas and cities outside of Naples, the pizza was made with new ingredients that gave it a unique flavor and was then referred to as a pizza of the city or pizza of the region. As the popularity of this new type of pizza spread, it became a sort of a trend in the Italian food world, because as other Sicilians and other people from the southern part of the country started to make their own pizza, the pizza that they started eating was often referred to as Neapian pizza. This was a popular trend in Italy and soon other Italian cities like Rome and Milan introduced and started to popularize the original Neapian pizza as well.

From the very beginning, the pizza that we know today started out as just a flat pizza that started out with tomato sauce and bread. Because these ingredients were already present in the tomato sauce and the bread, the ingredients of the next ingredient, the cheese, was added as a topping and baked on top of the original pizza. From there, the pizza started to change, as other people liked pizza just the way it was and began to make their own pizzas, butchers and bakers made modifications to the original pizza to suit their tastes. As more pizza restaurants opened, and as more people began making and selling their own pizza, the pizza that we have today is as it is today because it started out as this.
