Indian Neeraj Chopra Takes Gold In The Javelin Throw
Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday with a throw of 87.58 meters.
The Asian achieved his best mark in his second launch, which earned him to prevail in front of the Czechs Jakub Vadlejch, who went up to 86.67 meters, and Vitezslav Vesely, who threw up to 85.44 meters.
Chopra would have been enough with the first attempt to win the gold, as he was the only participant who exceeded the 87-meter barrier, but in his second launch, he increased the advantage over his competitors even more.
The Czechs Jakub Vadlejch (86.67 meters), world runner-up in 2017, and Vitezslav Vesely (85.44 m) were silver and bronze, while the German Julian Weber, world champion in 2017 and bronze in 2019, remained at the foot of the podium.
Neeraj Chopra, the world record holder in the junior category, had already warned of his aspirations in the qualifying phase, where he also left the best mark with a throw of 86.65, precisely one centimeter more than the German.
Until Chopra’s triumph at Tokyo 2020, the only athlete from India to have stood on the podium at an Olympic Games was Norman Pritchard, silver in the 200m and 200m hurdles in Paris 1900.
