Kyle Rittenhouse Attorney Mark Richards
Kyle Rittenhouse Attorney Mark Richards – Much controversy has arisen over the release of Kyle Rittenhouse after charges were dropped for shooting three people during protests for the justice of a racial attack last year in Kenosha, Wisconsi, for the death of Jacob Blake.
Violent riots broke out in Portland, Oregon and other cities across the United States in reaction to a court’s not guilty verdict on Kyle Rittenhouse, 18, who shot and killed two men during last year’s race riots in Wisconsin.
The protest of about 200 people was declared a riot in Portland after protesters began smashing windows, throwing objects at police, and threatening to set fire to a courthouse, KOIN TV reported.
Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell said shortly after the verdict that officers were working to tackle the protests Friday night and over the weekend.
At around 8:50 p.m., some 200 protesters had gathered in downtown Portland and blocked the streets.
By 9:00 p.m. there were already broken glass and damage had been caused to the doors of municipal buildings. Police tweeted that protesters were throwing objects at officers in the area, the television station said.
Portland saw ongoing, often violent protests following the murder of George Floyd last year by police in Minneapolis.
Some activists complained that the police were harsh in their response.
Protests also erupted in New York and other cities across the country in response to Rittenhouse’s acquittal, resulting in at least five arrests allegedly damaging cars and homes in the Middle Village, according to the NYPD.
Police tweeted a photo of vandalized vehicles in Queens, including a car with disabled license plates that had “Fk you” graffiti on the back in black spray paint.
Queens Councilor Robert Holden told The Post that protesters went through Crowley Park and were also “jumping into cars and stealing American flags” on the residential streets of Middle Village and Maspeth.
About 300 protesters also gathered outside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the Nets played the Orlando Magic on Friday night, denouncing the not guilty verdict as an embarrassing racial double standard in the court system.
Some carried signs that read: “There is no justice in the capitalist courts” and “Capitalism breeds racist terror.”
Meanwhile, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, dozens of protesters gathered outside the courthouse where Rittenhouse had been acquitted, for hours after the decision was announced.
A large-scale protest never materialized and the small group was largely peaceful.
A woman was arrested for drawing “Judge Schroeder must go” on the court walls and steps with chalk, in reference to Bruce Schroeder, the judge in the Rittenhouse trial, according to local reports. Other small protests took place in Chicago, where people gathered on city streets to protest the verdict in a 90-minute peaceful march, local media reported.
