For most of its running length, Janhit Mein Jaari feels like a compilation of Raju Shrivastav’s best work. A woman from Chanderi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, portrays a woman suffering from acute berozgaari and has been threatened with marriage by her family members.
With her two difficulties solved by working at a condom-manufacturing company comes a slew of new challenges in the plot.
Aside from being an excellent employee, she also has a supportive and caring husband.
The fact that her conservative in-laws are paying for their new automobile and Western-style toilet may not make them particularly happy.
With his earthy, small-town jokes about women with rod-in-legs, cheeky old men knocking on heaven’s door, and a friend knee-deep in the “friendzone,” Raaj Shaandilyaa can turn even the most mundane scenes into rib-tickling gold.
When the power goes out, it’s impossible not to crack up when you hear someone cry “transformer phukk gao.”
A lot of the humor in Raaj’s work comes from the fact that he writes in such a natural and straightforward manner.
Not everyone gets it perfectly, even in the Ayushmann Khurrana category of small-town comedy.
Despite the deterioration of the script, the actors continue to perform admirably.
Although Nushrratt does a fine job, he is often overshadowed by the other members of the cast, including the lusty octogenarian, the gossipy Narad Muni-type of the mohalla, and Tinu Anand (yes, that Tinu Anand).
It is only to their credit that even after 15 minutes of intense preaching and moral teachings, the writers still manage to evoke light laughter from the audience.
Janhit Mein Jaari might have been a fun film to watch if it’d stuck to its original plan. It was another cautionary tale about the dangers of accumulating too much stuff.
