Since the movie is based on Chetan Bhagat’s book of the same name, Half Girlfriend, one might be tempted to write half-reviews of it. But people like us have to sit through more than two hours of mind-numbing torture, watch the whole movie, and then leave the theatre to write full reviews of half-films. First of all, the movie Half Girlfriend – Dost Se Zyada Girlfriend Se Kam (yes, that’s the full name) does not start in “writer Chetan Bhagat’s room.” Director Mohit Suri should be praised for that. But taking Chetan Bhagat’s parts out of Half Girlfriend probably hurt the book more than it helped. Who would have thought that something like that could happen?

So Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor, trying hard to look like a 17-year-old but failing miserably), “coming from a village area,” goes to St. Steven’s College for the interviews. He works hard to show how much he knows about “samajshastra” (Sociology!). Madhav gives a speech that is half in English and half in Hindi. He then goes to the basketball court for the trials (he got in through the Sports quota) and sees Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor, learning how to get on your nerves, one film at a time).

He falls in love at first sight, even though Riya doesn’t pay him much attention. He shows her a few basketball moves that she does perfectly in the trials, and they both give each other fist bumps. Basketball, bad English, and even worse chemistry bring Madhav and Riya together. Shailesh, Madhav’s roommate (played by an earnest Vikrant Massey in a supporting role), doesn’t like how “Riya naam ki sonchidaiya” is making him dance to her songs.

One day, Shailesh decides to ask Madhav to find out if Riya loves him or not by putting her to a test. ‘Test?’ asks Madhav. The answer is obvious: take her to your room and do the deed. When Riya gets a headache while they are practising basketball, Madhav takes her to his room and makes sure his friends and roommate can see it.

The turning point of the book Half Girlfriend is the line “Rehti hai toh reh, varna kat le,” which is a weaker version of the line “Deti hai toh de, varna kat le” (which Mr. Bhagat translates as “Fck me, or fck off”). Good judgement: 1, Masala: 0.

Half Girlfriend then moves from Delhi to Simraon, in the state of Bihar (good job, Half Girlfriend team, changing Dumraon to Simraon—who would risk another case?) from Simraon to Delhi to New York and back again. There are a few dull turns that you can see coming from a mile away. There’s a picture of Bill Gates’s face on a random white guy. This face is competing with Shraddha Kapoor’s face to see who can’t show emotion better.

This story isn’t very good, but director Mohit Suri tries hard to save it with a lot of sad songs and numbers set in the rain. The last one would need its own page. Riya Somani’s obsession with walking out in the rain with her eyes half-closed is shown so often and in so many places that you’ll want to move to the Atacama Desert as soon as the movie is over.

Chetan Bhagat may have known that Half Girlfriend would become a Bollywood movie when he wrote it. This is why there are half-speeches in the story about patriotism and loving your own language, “Hindi.” The “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign is also mentioned.

One of the most important parts of the movie is when Riya helps Madhav give an English speech for Bill Gates. So when Madhav says to her, “We needing,” “We want,” and other phrases like that, and you see Riya, a Steven’s graduate who speaks English like her life depends on it, nodding, you know this is the Chetanverse. All of the English here is correct.

All of these, though, get lost and end up in Madhav’s search for his half-girlfriend.

Seema Biswas, who plays Madhav’s mother, and Vikrant Massey are the only good things about Half Girlfriend, and there aren’t many (always the dependable friend). There are a lot of silly things in the movie that would make you want to cut your wrist. Madhav and Riya climb up to the top of the India Gate to look at each other and then exchange Riya’s wedding card. No matter how hard you try, you can’t feel anything about Riya’s marriage or the Simraon School.

Arjun Kapoor does his best to play Madhav Jha, but the story of Half Girlfriend makes it hard for him to do much. In the movie Half Girlfriend, Shraddha Kapoor, who plays his half-girlfriend, seems to be very good at making the audience feel like she is not real. So much that there’s nothing left that makes you care about Riya Somani. You can only yawn when she is laughing, crying, dying, or just living.

By the end of the movie, you don’t understand a thing. You don’t know if it has to do with love, relationships, education and empowerment of women, moving on in life, the difference between English and Hindi, or anything else.
