Zar Amir Ebrahimi, an Iranian actress who lives in exile due to a smear campaign regarding her love life, was overcome with emotion when she learned that she had won the award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
Holy Spider, in which Ebrahimi, then 41 years old, plays the role of a journalist investigating a string of killings of prostitutes in the holy city of Mashhad in Iran, earned her the award.

During her speech of acceptance on Saturday, she shared this information with the crowd.
Holy Spider, directed by Danish-Iranian Ali Abbasi, is based on the actual tale of the “Spider Killer,” a working-class guy who murdered prostitutes in the early 2000s.
Because filming in Iran was prohibited, the production took place in Jordan.
For one of Iran’s longest-running soap operas, Nargess, Ebrahimi became a star when she was just 20 years old.
