Willow Season 1 Episode 5 Recap, Release Date, Cast

Willow Season 1 Episode 5: At the start of “Wildwood,” the action picks up just where Episode 4 left off, with the Gales, the dark, creepily designed servants of the Withered Crone, attacking our ragtag Scooby crew.

The action usually doesn’t start until later in the episodes, so it’s an intriguing way to begin, but it’s really just a setup to get the fellowship into the Wildwood. This mysterious forest magically compels you to remain there forever. This is so Tolkien-inspired that it comes across as plagiarism.

Willow Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

However, this is not developed further, as the episode instead works to bring back the Bone Reavers, a group crucial to both Jade and Boorman’s histories but thus far depicted only in a negative light.

This premise is questioned in “Wildwood,” with the help of extensive explication, and the possibility is introduced that the so-called “good men” could not be as good as they seem.

A subsequent surprise is given away quite early on, at least for me, because the head of the Bone Reavers is a woman named Scorpia who looks suspiciously like Jade. Moreover, I wonder if we required the twist, so that’s intriguing.

I’m ashamed I haven’t given Jade’s origin tale much thought. My guess was that the fact that her parents had been murdered by a gang calling themselves the Bone Reavers was entirely black and white. To be sure, things don’t work out that way, and we’ll have to wait and see if and how any of this matters down the road.

The basic concept, though, is this. Jade and Scorpia are the daughters of General Kael, the original Bone Reaver and a devoted servant of Bavmorda who was slain by Madmartigan at the Battle of Nockmaar.

The nefarious nature of Sorsha’s plan to have Jade reared in the castle and indoctrinated to hate her own people has severe repercussions for Jade and Kit’s future together, and Jade must face up to these (very little, it turns out, but more on this in a minute.)

Indeed, the Bone Reavers are rapidly accepted by the community; even tipsy Willow acknowledges as much. The plot of “Wildwood,” which explains but doesn’t delve into their history as slaves controlled and betrayed by Bavmorda, is quite obviously about redemption for them.

The episode seems to be saying, “They’re misunderstood,” which is a valid argument but, as far as I can see, unrelated to this season’s plot. Putting aside the character development in “Wildwood,” such as the introduction of Boorman’s past and the growth of Jade and Kit’s relationship, nothing that arises here appears to have any relevance to the larger plot.

On its own terms, however, it’s a lot of fun. Boorman recounts his activities since he last met Scorpia, but flashbacks show that he is embellishing the truth. It’s good to see some unique combinations, like Willow and Graydon or Kit and Elora.

An appearance by Rool is included! From Chalindria, Elora acquires the skills necessary to operate her wand. Moreover, when Jade’s true history is exposed, everyone unwittingly consumes “truth plums” that make them brutally honest, which is a significant issue because nearly everyone is concealing something from someone else or from themselves.

Graydon claims he was possessed as a youngster, and while she notes it’s a bit unusual how vulnerable he seems to be to this, she generally leaves it there. This contrasts Elora’s vision from last week, which revealed Graydon killing his beloved sibling. This is an excuse to fast-forward the season’s character relationships and hear everyone finally let loose with everything they’ve been keeping bottled up.

Elora overhears Willow telling Graydon that he isn’t a brilliant sorcerer and that his entire reputation is based on luck and happenstance. And as the dramatic scene between them draws to a close, Kit and Jade admit their affection for one another. Furthermore, trolls abduct Kit.

Overall, everything is reasonably practical, and I will reiterate that there are several things I really like about this. In contrast to other episodes, this one seems overly invested in the film’s canon, and it’s hard to see how any of it will pay off in the long run.

A cynic may say that the entire truth plums thing is just a writer’s technique to get everything out in the open without having to reveal and grapple with it naturally, and the programme rushes past what you’d think would be significant subplots.

On the other hand, I’m beginning to think that Willow isn’t the type of programme that wants to utilise its fantasy trappings to explore and answer significant human concerns or particularly concerned with logic or internal consistency. Instead, it seems satisfied to be little more than an enjoyable, occasionally blatantly ridiculous, and slightly self-referential little excursion with familiar and unfamiliar faces.
