Why Is Justin Turner Wearing Number 21? While playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Francisco Giants on September 15, Turner wore the No. 21 jersey in honor of Roberto Clemente Day and his nomination for the award named after the Hall of Famer.
MLB allowed this year’s award nominees and past recipients to wear a number 21 jersey while all on-field employees wore a Roberto Clemente jersey patch during games on Thursday and Friday.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and 2012 Roberto Clemente Award winner Clayton Kershaw wore jersey No. 21 for the series opener at Oracle Park.
Usually, the Dodgers jersey number would belong to Walker Buehler, but he will miss the rest of the season and possibly all of 2023 after undergoing a second Tommy John operation and a repair of his right flexor tendon.
Turner is the Dodgers’ Roberto Clemente Award candidate for the fifth time in the last six years. As the Dodgers’ 2019 nominee, Kenley Jansen was chosen by fan vote.
The award is given yearly to the Major League Baseball player who most exemplifies baseball as a whole via his or her remarkable character, community involvement, philanthropy, and exemplary accomplishments on and off the field, as nominated by each of the league’s 30 clubs.
It’s an absolute honor to be recognized by the Dodgers as the Roberto Clemente nominee for the fifth time.
Turner told DodgerBlue.com
The MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, Capital One, MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN, and TBS, as well as Clemente’s children Enrique, Luis, and Roberto Clemente Jr., will serve on a blue ribbon panel to determine the league-wide winner of the 2022 Roberto Clemente Award.
