Why Didn’t Nichelle Nichols Ever Appear as Nyota Uhura Again?

Why Didn’t Nichelle Nichols Ever Appear as Nyota Uhura Again? Star Trek actors are known for what they did on their first show. William Shatner will always be James Kirk from the original Star Trek. Patrick Stewart is Jean-Luc Picard, and Anson Mount is Captain Christopher Pike. But once an actor has done a lot of work on a series, he or she can always try something new with cameo roles.

A lot of the actors from Star Trek have played different roles in other shows or movies. Such as Ethan Phillips, who just showed up in Star Trek: First Contact and played a hologram of a human instead of Neelix, a Talaxian.

DeForest Kelley made a cameo in The Next Generation as his famous character Bones McCoy, which started the trend of actors making cameos in other shows as the characters they used to play. But much, much older. Kelley was still playing Bones in the original series film franchise. He was the first actor to cross over between productions that were still going on at the same time.

Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, and Montomgery Spock, played by James Doohan, would also show up on The Next Generation. Shatner would technically cross over with Star Trek Generations and appear with Stewart’s character Picard. Even George Takei would show up on an episode of Star Trek: Voyager as his version of Hikaru Sulu.

But one big name, Nichelle Nichols, and her version of Nyota Uhura didn’t show up in any other series or movie franchise.

Why Didn’t Nichelle Nichols Ever Appear as Nyota Uhura Again?

It would be hard to make a cameo appearance by Nichelle Nichols that hasn’t been done to death. You could use the idea of time travel, like the writers did with Scotty and Kirk, or you could use Sulu’s memories. You could even pull a Bones and say, “They’re still around, they’re just really old.” But if they did it anyway, it would be like someone else making a cameo.

Nichols did have an idea in which she was related to Guinan. The story goes that she wanted to be Guinan’s daughter, and the writers and producers also thought about making her Guinan’s mother. Those ideas never came to fruition, and some of them may not even be true.

Nichols could have been in Star Trek 2009, but she wouldn’t have played Uhura again. Instead, she would play Uhura’s grandmother in that version of the story. The 2008 writers’ strike ended any chance that Nichols would be in the movie.

Nichols never appeared in another franchise or film series, but she did a lot of other Star Trek work, mostly with unofficial products, podcast series, and even some video game work. So it’s not like she forgot about Star Trek or Star Trek forgot about her.
