Who Is Hosting Beauty and the Beast 30th Anniversary? Disney’s Beauty and the Beast turns 30, but ABC is celebrating the film’s delayed anniversary with a live-action TV special based on The Little Mermaid Live. Like the 2019 event, this one has celebrity performances of musical songs interspersed with animated film dialogue. But in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration, there is a host, thus, the technique is slightly different. When the special airs on Thursday, December 14, at 8/7c, here’s what you can look forward to.

Rita Moreno is the host of Beauty and the Beast’s 30th Anniversary. Despite being credited as “The Narrator,” Rita Moreno performs more as a hostess than a narrator, welcoming a studio audience and peppering the production with trivia about the film’s creation.

The screen legend provides modern TV audiences with a look at how animated films used to be made by presenting animator Mark Henn as he sketches Belle and explains what storyboards are as she introduces one of the film’s notable moments in its layout form. She says she’ll reveal behind-the-scenes details and show off exclusive footage from the film’s production. Still, as an extra feature junkie, I haven’t seen anything here that isn’t also available in the film’s multiple special edition releases’ extra features.
