Who Is Adar in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? Joseph Mawle, known for his role as Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones, is the actor who portrays Adar. Most fans of fantasy television shows are likely already familiar with Mawle.

A prolific stage actor, he has also made guest appearances on several other television programs, such as the American series Sense 8 and the British series Ripper Street and Birdsong.

The Silvan elf Arondir makes the initial discovery that Adar exists while investigating the increasing evil in the Southlands. It has come to our attention that orcs are digging tunnels deep into the earth, most likely in quest of a weapon.

In Episode 3, the orcs kidnap Arondir, along with several humans and elves, and force them to dig tunnels for them.

He observes that the orcs always refer to a leader named “Adar,” to whom they answer.

Although we do not know much more about Adar then, we get a glimpse of him after Episode 3, when Arondir is hauled in front of him.

The character is an entirely original conception of the show. As such, it is impossible to say if he is just some fresh antagonist or an early iteration of an antagonist that we are all familiar with quite well…

Is Adar Actually A Shape-Shifting Sauron?

According to Tolkien’s history of Middle-Earth, Sauron is present in Middle-Earth during the Second Age, which is when The Rings of Power takes place. Sauron is not yet the main antagonist of the novel.

Polygon reports that Sauron consolidated his forces in Mordor, near the Southlands.

However, the circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that Adar is not Sauron. During the Second Age, he used his ability to change shape by disguising himself as the helpful Annatar to gain knowledge about ringcraft.

In addition, Sauron would be kept quite occupied if he went around playing the role of Adar. Not to mention that there are two additional candidates for the position of Sauron: the man from the sky and Halbrand.

It is also possible for him to assume the appearance of Adar through shapeshifting, but such a sudden revelation would, to be honest, be lacking in drama.

During their conversation about Adar, Arondir and the other elves bring up the fact that Adar is another name for Sauron, which indicates that this is a distinct possibility.

Even yet, Sauron has thousands of years at his disposal to establish his rule. Even if our heroes are victorious in discovering his identity, it is highly improbable that they will be able to alter the course that he is on significantly.
