Kate Winslet broke the record for the most extended underwater sequence during her month-long shoot for Avatar: The Way of Water.

In a free diving scene, Winslet set a new record by holding her breath for seven and fourteen seconds, surpassing the six-minute mark set by Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible film Rogue Nation.

To put this in perspective, the typical individual can hold their breath for about two minutes.

Avatar 2’s cast had to learn how to free dive (diving without oxygen tanks) to film lengthy scenes underwater.

The cast members told Variety that they routinely competed to see who could hold their breath the longest, with Kate Winslet coming out on top with a time of more than seven minutes. Her fellow cast members could hold their breath for between three and six minutes.
