Violet Crawley is reaching the end of her life, as was alluded to at the conclusion of the first Downton Abbey film. She spends the second feature making trouble and mocking her past, as she did in the previous film.
The movie shows that when Violet was a young lady, she fell in love with the Marquis de Montmirail and spent a memorable summer on the French Riviera with him as their companion.
However, Violet ultimately wed Robert’s father, Lord Grantham, and although their marriage did not have the same level of passion as the one she shared with Montmirail, it was still a prosperous and productive union for the couple.
After taking care of her business, which included bequeathing Montmirail’s home to her great-granddaughter Sybil “Sybie” Branson, the Dowager gets visits from her cherished family members and staff towards the end of the movie as she bids her farewells.
Following these tender moments, Violet passed away in a calm and dignified manner.
The last scene of the movie depicts the whole cast of Downton Abbey, both upstairs and downstairs, following the hearse as it transports the deceased character’s casket to the funeral service.
