Yennefer of Vengeberg is an incredibly powerful sorceress and one of the three main characters in The Witcher. The Netflix series expands on her story that was only alluded to in the books, showing her as a hunchbacked girl who was taken in and trained by Tissaia.
Indo-British actress Anya Chalotra plays Yennefer in the series. Prior to this role, Chalotra studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and recently had small roles in 2018’s Wanderlust and 2019’s Sherwood.
In the series The Witcher, Yennefer of Vengerberg is a central figure. Positioned alongside Geralt de Rivia and Ciri as the driving forces of the narrative, but in reality, she is the true heroine of the series.
While Henry Cavill’s White Wolf draws fans from other forms of the franchise. Once the show starts and Yennefer introduces himself, it becomes painfully obvious who’s growing the most and who’s playing the hero role. While the travels of Geralt and Ciri unite them and set in motion the machinations of destiny. Yennefer’s clean rise as a witch sees her challenge to a world that has been turned into the chaos of men and monsters.
The Warlock handles Yennefer’s journey with care. Detailing her painful youth while providing the foundation for what will lead her to adulthood as a witch. Whereas Geralt is already a wizard during his time on screen. And that Ciri spends the whole series chasing the shadow of the Butcher of Blaviken, making many mistakes along the way. Yennefer’s story is much more breathtaking. So it’s easy to justify his role as a true hero at least during season 1.
What Happened to Yennefer In The Witcher?
But more than anything, what makes Yennefer’s portrayal within The Witcher the true hero of the show is his willingness to change parts of the world that he disagrees with.
Yennefer clearly displays a hatred for the patriarchal values that animate much of the El Brujo world. Especially when it comes to royalty and authority. Her decision to use her physical appearance and exploit men’s opinions of her for her own gain is something few characters grasp, let alone realize. When Yennefer encounters something that he finds unjustly oppressive. Whether it’s the mayor of a city that discriminates against wizards or a wish for a wizard that could influence his own freedom. She rebels against this and tries to encourage change. As for heroic qualities, this is quite important.
It’s all the more shocking when Yennefer’s willingness to fight for change is contrasted with the actions of others. Geralt is content to kill monsters and collect coins until he finds Yennefer. She is the trigger in his own life that makes him question his place in the world and what he really wants. Ciri is a girl who is forced to hide and who spends most of the series on the run. Unable to change your situation. And subjected to a series of terrible events because the world of El Brujo is an inherently cruel place.
Yennefer is the hero who tries to change it. Although many of his actions in season 1 are changes that directly benefit him. And it looks like he’ll become an even bigger agent of change in The Witcher season 2. That will bring Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer together more often now that their narratives start to overlap.
