What Happened To Sergio Rico PSG? Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), one of the foremost football clubs in the world, recently cancelled their seventh annual fundraising gala event. This abrupt decision was due to the severe medical situation concerning the team’s backup goalkeeper, Sergio Rico. The event, originally scheduled for a Tuesday night, aimed to finance goodwill projects in Paris. Notable attendees included players from both the men’s and women’s football teams and PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
What happened to Sergio Rico PSG, you may ask? On Sunday, a serious accident involving Rico took place at El Rocio, a procession event in Almonte, Huelva, in the province of Andalucia, Spain. The event is a vibrant showcase of the local culture, involving a procession of walking people, riders on horseback, and carts.
Post-accident, the 29-year-old PSG star was airlifted to the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville. According to a statement from the hospital, Sergio Rico suffered from a cranioencephalic traumatism, a severe brain injury. He remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under sedation, with his condition reported as stable despite the seriousness of the injury.
The cancellation of the gala underlines the gravity of the situation. PSG president Al-Khelaifi expressed the club’s deep concern: “The entire Paris Saint-Germain family is deeply affected by the tragedy affecting Sergio Rico and his loved ones.”
Sergio Rico, born in Seville, has had a notable football career, having made almost 200 appearances for his hometown club, Sevilla. His accomplishments include winning the 2015 Europa League final and an unused substitute in the final the following year.
He later spent a season on loan at Fulham in 2018-19 and was second-choice goalkeeper when loaned to PSG the following season. Despite the final defeat to Bayern Munich, Rico started the Champions League quarter and semi-finals. He moved to PSG permanently in 2020 but was second in line with Gianluigi Donnarumma’s joining in 2021. Rico spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Mallorca.
The entire PSG team has been given time off following their Ligue 1 title win, confirmed on Saturday. The players are due to return to training on Wednesday, with their final match of the campaign scheduled for Saturday against Clermont Foot.
As the football world rallies behind Sergio Rico and his family during this challenging time, the question of “what happened to Sergio Rico PSG” serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges sports professionals face. We send our thoughts and best wishes to Sergio Rico for a speedy recovery.
