Was The Last Duel Based On A True Story? Ridley Scott is not happy with the results of ‘The Last Duel’. Released last October, the film has only grossed 27 million dollars worldwide with a budget of 100 million, which is a total box office failure with millionaire losses. In his speech as a guest on Marc Maron’s podcast, the filmmaker wanted to find the culprits. And he didn’t find them in the promotional focus of the film, but in the younger audience, which doesn’t seem to have been very attracted to his medieval proposal starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Jodie Comer.

The incident in the film has elements of fiction, but the story is based on the actual case of trial by combat, where duels to the death were used to determine whether a person was guilty or innocent of whatever crime they were charged with. . This method is used when crimes were committed without witnesses, which forced to close the “case” in a different and definitive way, thinking that God would give victory to whoever was telling the truth.

Well, this same year, Rudy Giuliani asked that the elections, in which his client Donald Trump lost, be decided by trial by combat, to which Eric Jager, author of the book that inspired the film, said that “The fact that trial by combat, also known as ‘God’s trial,’ traditionally looked to heaven to ensure a fair and equitable verdict only makes the whole thing seem even more absurd to us today.”

The real case of The Last Duel happened in 1368, when a woman named Marguerite de Carrouges said that she had been raped by Jacques Le Gris , so her husband wanted to take the case to court, but was ignored and the judge said that Marguerite surely he had dreamed it and asked that no further investigation be done.

Sir Jean de Carrouges traveled to Paris and asked King Charles VI for help. With this, the case reached Parliament, where the testimonies were analyzed and even Marguerite herself had to tell in detail what happened to her, revealing a terrible story of rape by Le Gris and another man. Parliament could not decide, so a trial by combat, already extremely rare, was allowed to take place. If her husband won, Marguerit could prove that he was telling the truth, but if he lost, his accusations would be taken as false and she would end up sentenced to death.

Jager wrote of the duel, “dressed in all black and exposed to the gazes of the crowd, I anxiously awaited the outcome. The trial by combat would decide whether he had told the truth, therefore whether he would live or die.”

We won’t tell the ending so as not to spoil the film, but the legend of the duel says that “Some have suggested that her husband forced the story out of her to get revenge on Le Gris, his former friend turned rival at court. And some, invoking the most popular theory, acknowledge the rape but say that Marguerite wrongly accused the wrong man, an “honest” but tragic mistake that robbed Le Gris of his fortune and good name.”
