‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3: The Detail You Missed About Grogu’s Possible Storyline

The Detail You Missed About Grogu’s Possible Storyline: The ending of the second season of The Mandalorian gave the impression that Grogu would not be with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in future seasons. However, the new storylines in The Book of Boba Fett showed that the two were inseparable. In the first two episodes of the third season, it was clear that Grogu was important to Din, and the baby continues to be the subject of theories, discussions, and memes. Grogu doesn’t look like he’ll be going to Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy any time soon, but his sensitivity to the Force is sure to bring in some enemies that his protector will have to fight. Grogu has shown that he can protect himself with the Force, but something in “The Mines of Mandalore” suggests that he may be learning to talk.

In “The Mines of Mandalore,” when Alamite defenders attack Din, Grogu is able to get away from the dangerous hidden city. If you read the subtitles on Disney+, you may have noticed that Grogu has been saying some words that are hard to understand since Season 2. For example, whenever he says “patu,” it seems to mean something about food. “The Mines of Mandalore” is the only episode in Season 2 where the subtitles are listed as “babbling” instead of “cooing.” It doesn’t seem likely that a series with as much attention to continuity as the Star Wars saga would make a mistake like this. Grogu may be starting to speak some alien language.

Grogu’s Species Has Been a Mystery

Grogu’s species has been one of the biggest mysteries in the whole Star Wars franchise, so the question of what he said when he was a baby is even more important to the story than what he wrote in Din’s baby book. Since The Empire Strikes Back, when Yoda first appeared, Lucasfilm has been notoriously quiet about the character’s origins, species, language, and upbringing. Even though the modern Star Wars canon has a huge database of worlds, alien races, and languages, “Yoda’s species” is still a mystery. George Lucas has had fun debunking popular fan theories. At one point, he even said he was the “love child” of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy from The Muppet Show.

In The Phantom Menace, Yaddle, a female member of Yoda’s species who was also one of the twelve Jedi Council members, made her debut. In early Legends episodes, Yaddle spoke in a backwards voice like Yoda, but in last year’s animated anthology show Tales of the Jedi, she had a very different look. Bryce Dallas Howard voiced a version of Yaddle who, for all intents and purposes, spoke pretty normally. This suggests that not all known members of Yoda’s species may have the same traits. Since Howard has directed more than one episode of The Mandalorian, this could be another clue about where they came from. But Yaddle won’t be there to answer any of the questions herself, because Darth Sidious makes it so that she dies in a fatal duel with Count Dooku (Corey Burton) (Ian McDiarmid).

In the last season of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) said that Yoda’s species has a strong connection to the Force because of how they were made. Some of the older Legends stories had other Jedi Masters from the same species, like Vandar Tokare in the Knights of the Old Republic comic book, Otegin in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game The Old Republic, and Minch in the short story “Heart of Darkness” from Star Wars Tales. But right now, only Yoda, Yaddle, and Grogu are known to be members of the modern canon. What Grogu says could have a big impact on one of the biggest unanswered questions in the saga.

Grogu’s Link to Jedi History

Grogu’s first words are also very important to how he learns to use the Force. Even though we don’t know everything about his background yet, we do know that he was taken from the Jedi Temple at some point. During the events of Order 66, Obi-Wan Kenobi had a lot of flashbacks to the 501st Legion’s attack on the Jedi Temple. Din’s conversations with Grogu may tell us more about that terrible day. It would also bring them together because Din’s homeworld was bombed during the Clone Wars, so he knows how it feels.

During the time of the Empire, all known Jedi and people who were sensitive to the Force were hunted down. Grogu’s ability to stay hidden kept him safe for the 20 years before the Rebel Alliance was formed. Din’s growing powers do, however, put him in different kinds of danger on his missions. Jedi are still rare in the galaxy, and Luke has just started teaching his own students. After the fight with the Knights of Ren, we know from the sequel trilogy that he failed in his attempts to raise a new army of heroes, putting the Jedi in even more danger.

Din and Grogu Have a Mutual Upbringing

Still, the time between the end of Return of the Jedi and the start of The Force Awakens hasn’t been talked about much in the larger Star Wars canon, so any information about what the Jedi were doing during this time will be interesting to look into. Din might be better off knowing as little as possible about Grogu, but as long as bad guys like Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) are out there, he should know what kinds of bad guys might be looking for him.

Whether Grogu’s language is something he was born with or something he learned while travelling with Din, it will be interesting to see how both Grogu and Din are oddities in their own cultures. Grogu is a unique member of his species because he isn’t training to become a Jedi. Din has had problems with his Mandalorian tribe in the past, and even though he’s trying to retrain himself this season, he’s also developing his own cultural traits. The fact that both Din and Grogu don’t believe in traditional ideas based on their backgrounds is another reason why their relationship as father and son is so sweet.
