Spiderhead 2022 Netflix Review
Even mass shooters can dwell in low-security homes overlooking the Fjords at the Spiderhead complex. Manipulative Steve never misses a chance to remind his fellow convicts of the luxurious lifestyles they’re enjoying while serving time for serious offenses.
When Jeff gets engaged in a drunk driving accident that kills his friend, it’s a plot point that reflects something that really occurred to Teller, leaving him with emotional scars that he periodically talks about in interviews and facial scars that will now be a part of any character he ever portrays.
As you might expect, the inmates at Spiderhead are largely unregulated for a reason. We soon learn that the prison serves as the testing location for a number of disturbing experiments.
Moreover, Steve has an excellent test subject in the guilt-ridden Jeff, who doesn’t need to be coerced into participating in his increasingly unethical human experiments.
Several of Steve’s medications have the ability to soften the heart and mind of those who use them. It impacts libido and mood with different drugs.
There is even medicine that enhances one’s ability to speak clearly. Steve, on the other hand, wants to create a medicine that mimics the sensation of being in love.
Claudio Miranda shot the digital cinematography, and Joseph Trapanese composed the electronic score, and even if Spiderhead isn’t the most essential Kosinski movie, it’s an excellent showcase for his distinctive style as a filmmaker. He was always attracted by modernist architecture.
All of these observations are merely surface-level. Almost all of Kosinski’s films are about loneliness at their core. Instead of portraying these fears figuratively as he did in Tron Legacy, Oblivion, and Maverick, Kosinski does so for the first time in Spiderhead.
Regarding commitment to his work, Steve resembles figures like Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn in Tronic Legacy and Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun 2, who sacrificed practically every personal relationship they had to accomplish their goals.
One of the most appealing aspects of Spiderhead—and we’ll get to the issues with it in a moment—is that it doesn’t take place in the distant future, which lends urgency to some of its ideas. When Steve administers medications to the detainees, he does so with the use of an iPhone.
There’s old-school rock music with the film’s retro-styled aircraft and the boat that can get people from this remote location on the mainland.
Although Steve’s eventual master plan will undoubtedly appeal to Vijay Deverakonda types, Spiderhead never entirely comes together despite its thematic grandiosity.
Steve is a one-dimensional character who serves only as a hindrance to developing a connection with Jeff and serves as a worthless diversion in the film. There’s a lot of variety in the tone.
If Spiderhead isn’t sure what kind of film it wants to be, it’s hard to tell. Despite this, Hemsworth’s performance is quite engaging. Like Steve, he portrays him as an arrogant, self-absorbed tech bro with an inflated sense of his own importance.
In a positive sign of Kosinski’s progress, this is the second consecutive film in which the emotional underpinnings outweigh the glitzy aesthetics.
Although Jeff’s redemption narrative is authentic and moving, it would have been much more potent if his misdeeds had been more morally ambiguous. Spiderhead, on the other hand, prefers to wave at lofty ideas from afar rather than engage in a face-to-face conversation.
