Stan’s AI-Generated South Park Plot Sounded Familiar
After Stan, Butters, Clyde, and Cartman used ChatGPT to write their essays and answer their girlfriends’ messages, they got in trouble when Stan’s girlfriend, Wendy, found AI-generated text on her phone. Like the crazy change Butters went through in season 26 of South Park, this story quickly came to a suspiciously neat end. Stan came up with a clever answer, and in the process, the show made fun of South Park’s own writing. When Stan used ChatGPT to end the episode’s story, the supposedly AI-written sequence sounded like a lazy South Park episode, so the scene sounded very familiar.
From Cartman’s insults to Stan’s passionate speech at the end to Mr. Mackey’s catchphrase that no one remembers, the last scenes of “Deep Learning” relied on old South Park tropes. To be fair, the sequence was still funny, especially when South Park’s hero pointed out that AI is mostly owned by a few big tech companies. Stan pushed for this technology to be open source, but he didn’t say that the technology itself was bad. Instead, he said that the corporations that were hoarding it were to blame. But, just like the second episode of South Park’s 26th season, the episode still ended with Stan talking directly to the audience while other characters made jokees.
South Park Mocked The Show’s Familiar Formula
The ending of the South Park episode was done on purpose to be way too neat, and the scene wrapped up the story way too quickly. But this worked in an episode where the boys (and their teacher) avoided the real work of relationships, teaching, and school. When Mr. Garrison said that there was no reason to worry about AI-made movies because Hollywood movies are already copied and repeated, this was another clear example of meta-humor in South Park season 26. Since the first episode of the season didn’t bring back South Park’s famous Kanye West joke, the show has been trying to avoid obvious, crowd-pleasing stories in favour of more original and thought-provoking ones.
South Park Season 26 Proves The Show’s Experiments Aren’t Bad
To be fair to South Park’s creators, the show has changed a few times in the last few years. From Randy’s role becoming more important to trying out serialisation over the course of a season to making feature-length specials, the show has tried new things. But not all of these experiments have worked out, so it made sense for season 26 of South Park to remind viewers that they don’t really want episodes that are made by computers and follow strict rules. This was also the second time in two episodes that South Park took a clear stance on an issue, instead of the usual “any stance is bad” attitude. Like South Park’s strange toilet paper storyline, this made the plot surprisingly good.
Some of South Park’s experiments have been ambitious but failed, but at their best, these episodes show that the people who make the show still want it to feel new. The end of “Deep Learning” showed that the satirical show can do better than this by imagining an AI-made South Park episode full of catchphrases and jokes that everyone knows. Even though it takes some creative risks and can be hard to pull off, South Park season 26 can still surprise viewers, even after 25 years on the air, as long as the show keeps its “human touch,” as the show said.
