Austin Butler presented the final edition of SNL before the holiday break on December 17. The Christmas program was a farewell to one of the regulars, Cecily Stong, and featured a variety of festive comedies.
The actor signed on with SNL in 2012, and since then, she’s played numerous famous people on the show, including Melania Trump and the Kardashian-Jenners. Her most memorable creations are the British singer Gemma and the Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party.
Last year, while dressed as a clown, Cecily sparked a debate on abortion. She emphasized that this practice was commonplace because it boosted the topic’s interest level among listeners. She expressed gratitude for the positive response to the socially relevant sketch in an interview on The View.
She said this was the only section she had ever done without notes. Cecily said she thought no one wanted to give them messages about the part since they wanted to ensure everything was clear.
The news of Cecily’s departure was public hours before her last episode of SNL aired. She posted a message to Instagram explaining her decision and apologizing to her followers for keeping it a secret.
Kenan Thompson teased her departure at the end of the last episode against a Radio Shack backdrop. He remarked on the unique variety of her performances on SNL and said he doubts Radio Shack would have lasted as long without her.
Next, he introduced “casual Elvis” (Austin Butler), who began praising her before breaking into song. Even Cecily joined in as the rest of the cast performed “Blue Christmas” as a farewell to their cherished cast member.
SNL will not air this week due to Christmas Eve Mass but will return in January after the new year of 2023 has begun.
