The true story is – and the true meaning – of Phexxi is that it is a “new form of birth control for women who are wary of hormones .” One of its main promoters, Saundra Pelletier, the CEO of Evofem, has told the world’s media, that she hopes to connect with a new and different generation that opens up to new effective and non-traditional contraceptive methods.

Phexxi was launched on the US market in September, after receiving approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Prescriptions issued for Phexxi are a few thousand, about 17,280, according to its publicly traded parent company, Evofem. It is a slim figure compared to the estimated 8.6 million women who have undergone female sterilization or the 6.6 million women who take birth control pills.

The commercial, created by McCann Health, takes place in a comfortable, spacious, and pink room, and in it, Annie Murphy explains, with a text loaded with humor, the characteristics of the product. The two most distinctive are the lack of hormones, which are present in other contraceptive products and cause side effects in some women, and the fact that it is not administered through a regular schedule, but when they are going to have sex.

The campaign is titled “House Rules” and, apart from the spot, which is being broadcast on national television in the United States, includes two other pieces: a video in which Murphy explains what kind of contraceptive methods he has used throughout his life and the problems they have caused him, and a making of the spot.
