Math teacher Jim Gard told The Miami Herald that Cruz could have been seen as a potential threat long before the shooting. Gard said he believes the school sent email warning teachers that Cruz should not be allowed onto campus with a backpack.
“There were problems with him last year because he threatened students, and I suppose he was asked to leave campus,” Gard told the newspaper.
The 17-year-old student Victoria Olvera said that Cruz had been abusive to his ex-girlfriend and that his expulsion was due to a fight he had with her new boyfriend. Cruz had been attending another school in Broward County since he was expelled, school officials said.
The teen was wearing a maroon T-shirt with an ROTC badge and the school’s mascot – an eagle – when he was detained away from the building about an hour after the shooting. Investigators indicated that the assailant fled the school during the chaos by mixing with the students to remain inconspicuous.
Jonathan Guimaraes, 17, told the newspaper that he had been on the program with Cruz.
