Growing up, Melanie Chandra was a number cruncher, particularly interested in physics and mathematics. This likely influenced her decision to study mechanical engineering at Stanford University, where she graduated in 2006. During her studies, she also studied improvisational comedy.

After graduation, Melanie began working with McKinsey & Company, but at the same time had the ambition to devote herself to modeling and acting. Over time, she enrolled in the 2007 Miss India America competition, which she eventually won. Melaine then worked as a model and appeared in various advertising campaigns for Herbal Essences, Clinique, Glamor Magazine, Nescafe, LG, P&G, and many others. The following year she played Shalini in D for Dopidi (2013), an Indian Telugu film before they got a regular role as Vandana MTV Desi Writer’s Block (2013). Melaine portrayed several other characters in television series such as NCIS: Los Angeles (2014), The Edge (2015), Nashvillie (2016), Code Black (2015-2017), Brown Nation(2016), and her guest role as Lela Samra on NBC Law & Order: Special Unit for Victims (2017).
