Julian Ryerson: Who Is The New Right Back For Borussia Dortmund? Ryerson was born in the Norwegian town of Lyngdal and went to the Viking Stavanger academy. He made his senior debut in 2015 and helped score ten goals in 68 first-team domestic games before signing a three-year deal with Union in the summer of 2018.
Norwegian footballer Julian Ryerson plays right back for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and for his country’s national team.
At the end of his first season in Berlin, Union made history by getting promoted to the Bundesliga. The 6’0″ defender played eight times for Union. Almost halfway through the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, he is getting close to 80 appearances, and he is in the top 12 for crosses from open play for the season. The Norway international signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Dortmund in January 2023. He had scored three goals and set up three others in 109 games for Union.
Though he primarily plays right back, Ryerson can also cover the left side of the field, much like the former Dortmund player Achraf Hakimi. So far in 2022/23, he has played more games on the opposite side of the field than on his preferred left wing-back.
The name Ryerson is more reminiscent of Uncle Sam than Ragnar Lodbrok. Since Julian’s dad is American, he used to be able to suit up for the USMNT. His cousins are also professional soccer players.
