John Hannah The Last of Us

John Hannah The Last of Us: The Last of Us is one of the most-anticipated TV shows based on a video game in the last ten years. The game is a success that can’t be denied, and it still feels new. Adaptations of top-rated video games rarely seem to capture the magic and success of the game. Has this TLOU series fallen into the same trap, or does it succeed where so many others have failed? Here are my thoughts on the first episode of The Last of Us. The Last Of Us Episode 1 Recap, Ending Explain

John Hannah The Last of Us

Before you sit down to watch The Last of Us, you should know that it is not an exact copy of the game. A few scenes are similar, but they are changed in different ways to fit the live-action version. Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin also added new scenes to learn more about what happened, who was involved, and how decisions were made. This makes it easier for people to get into the story and feel like they know the characters. A lot of careful planning must go into making a show like this, and after watching the first episode, I think the creators, directors, actors, and everyone else on the team know what they’re doing.

In the first scene, scientists (John Hannah and Christopher Heyerdahl) talk to a talk show host (Josh Brener) about pandemics and how humans will always be able to beat them. One scientist says that fungus is the biggest enemy and explains why. They talk about how global warming and people being careless will make it possible for fungi to change, not just to survive but to thrive in such a world, spreading and taking over people in the end. In this case, people lose because of a virus. This prologue alone tells you everything you need to know about the zombie outbreak in the series, even if you have never played the game and don’t know how it all started.

In the series, Day 0 happened in 2003, but in the game, it occurred in 2013. People like Joel (Pedro Pascal), Tommy (Gabriel Luna), and Sarah (Nico Parker), who live normal lives in Austin, Texas, are introduced to the audience. Sarah is a student, Tommy is a troublesome uncle, and Joel does his best to take care of his daughter, but sometimes she takes care of him.

After a few scenes between Sarah and Joel’s dads, everything starts to happen. What’s really great is that we get a short look at their lives on the day the virus breaks out, which takes about 30–35 minutes of screen time. This is another choice that helps people learn more about these characters and care about what happens to them.

The characters and the audience are very affected by the apocalypse and the feeling overwhelmed by the chaos. We see the damage, dead people, and the military trying to close down the whole area so they can get things under control. It makes the whole situation so sad, and when that one big moment comes up, which I won’t tell you about in case you haven’t played the game, you know it’s real for the characters. Everything about the situation is sad, and it’s almost impossible not to cry.

After an explanation of how the end of the world came to be, the series jumps ahead 20 years. We see Joel and Tess (Anna Torv), who live in Boston, Massachusetts, and have a hard time making ends meet. They are very broken people who just live to live and don’t have any other goals in life. When they go to the Fireflies’ base to get their money, they meet Marlene (Merle Dandridge). She tells them they can have what they want, but only if they take Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to one of their bases in the West. This changes everything.

Ellie is the same cocky, rude, and mean-spirited teenager we know from the games, and I have to say that Bella Ramsey does a great job in this role. At the end of the episode, there is a famous shot of two skyscrapers from the game. This is one of the places that players always remember.

After what happened on Day 0, it’s easy to see how well these characters get along on screen. Pedro Pascal’s version of Joel is a perfect nod to Troy Baker’s version from the game, giving us the exact same character we love but adding something to make Joel his own. The same goes for Bella Ramsey’s role as Ellie and how she plays it. Each of the characters introduced in the first episode did a great job of introducing themselves and adding something new to make them seem more mysterious. This gave viewers a chance to find out more about them.

Showing viewers parts of the game they haven’t seen before helps a lot, especially at the beginning when we see a lot of new things and improvements to old ones. All of the zombies and disasters in the prologue look like they are happening in real life. The people who worked on the sets and the VFX team both deserve a big round of applause for finding ways to make it even sadder and more powerful.

As if that wasn’t enough, Gustavo Santaolalla’s beautiful music shows us everything that the game version did. A feeling of fear, depression, and struggle to stay alive, but with flashes of goodness, hope, and reasons to live.

I’ve been waiting for this series to start since the day it was announced, and I can’t wait for the next episodes, which I’m sure will be just as good as this one, if not better. The first episode of The Last of Us shows gamers that a good live-action adaptation can be made, and you don’t have to wait until the end of the season or series to see that it was worth it. From the first second of the first episode, it’s worth it.

The first episode of The Last of Us on HBO is now available to stream on HBO and HBO Max, and new episodes come out every week. Did you like it? Use Twitter and our Discord channel to tell us.
