Is Tyler Perry Done With Madea? In the new Netflix film A Madea Homecoming, everyone’s favourite foul-mouthed, gun-toting grandma is back for more shenanigans. The film features Tyler Perry’s comeback as Madea, centred on her throwing a party to celebrate her great-graduation grandson from college. Despite having played a part in over a dozen films, Perry decided to return to it after the mayhem of 2020.

Is Tyler Perry Done With Madea?

According to CNN, Perry brought Madea to the stage in 1999 with the play I Can Do Bad All By Myself before adapting her for the big screen with Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005. Thanks to the character’s popularity, he has released many new films about Madea, including the animated Madea’s Tough Love from 2015.

Perry felt he had wrapped up her story by the late 2010s and was ready to move on to other things. At the time, he had this to say to CNN: “I’ll be 50 this year and I’m just at a place in my life where this next 50 I want to do things differently. This character has been amazing. So many people have loved her. It’s been a great franchise”.

Still, he allowed for the potential that she would come back with new information. But, he continued, “But for right now, no, I think I’m done.”

Perry was promoting her 2019 movie A Madea Family Funeral at the time; the film did not kill her off but instead focused on Madea preparing for an unexpected funeral.

A little over a year after A Madea Family Funeral was released, the world was rocked by several challenges, including the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and continuous instances of police brutality. Perry had just recently retired Madea, but he felt compelled to bring her back at that time to provide some humour and joy to the world.
